“MODERN AMERICAN GOTHIC”...MODEL DRAWING....EVENT 1....8TH GRADE
WHAT STUDENT IS MAKING:

Drawings will be from life (torso only).
TEACHER PRESENTS:
Show and discuss "American Gothic". Note the composition and the added background.
Review and clarify value range and the benefits of using all values from white to black.
figures will extend off the bottom and sides of the paper.
Encourage creativity in the development of a background.
Drawing should resemble models.
Go over judging criteria.
HOW TO CREATE ARTWORK:
Step # 1 - Models should be placed so that every student can see them clearly and have a frontal view.
Step # 2 - Draw the models large so that the lower torsos and shoulders extend off the page and so the heads of the figures extend into the upper half of the page. Drawing MUST look like models!
Step # 3 - Add values and details to achieve realism.
Step # 4 - Add a background. This could be landscape, architectural structure, or something totally imaginary. Be sure to use lighter values so that the figures stand out in contrast. FILL THE ENTIRE PAGE!
