SCRATCH ART "EXOTIC BIRDS"......................................EVENT 2..................7th GRADE
WHAT STUDENT IS MAKING:
Apply the principles of subtractive drawing with attention to detail, (bird feathers), value, hatching and crosshatching. Work using photographs of exotic birds (as a reference). Be creative in making a background for your bird.
TEACHER PRESENTS:
The Jungles of countries studied in 7th grade Social Studies are full of exotic birds like toucans, macaws and cockatoos. (Show examples) Using photographs of birds as reference create a drawing of an exotic bird on scratch art paper. Explain the process of etching as drawing in reverse, instead of adding shadows you must pull out highlights. Discuss hatching, stippling and crosshatching to achieve the impression of different values, visual texture through repeated pattern and contour line. Demonstrate the use of a wooden stylus (scratch art paper tool).

HOW TO CREATE ARTWORK:
1. Sketch (using a photo of an exotic bird) bird on 8 1/2” x 11” paper. Include a creative background that does not interfere with the bird.
2. Paper clip the sketch to the etching paper.
3. Put a magazine or something softer than the table top under etching paper.
4. Trace over original sketch pressing firmly, this will transfer an impression of the image onto the etching paper.
5. Using the impression as a guide, hatch, stipple and crosshatch in different ways to pull out the image using different textures and values - white, gray, and black..
6. Label artwork on the BACK. Clean up!

- Uses many contours, textures, values and crosshatching.
- Strong evidence of detail.
- The bird fills the paper. The background is creative, yet, it does not interfere with the bird.
- Neatness.
