MODEL DRAWING “Arabian Knight / Princess”................EVENT 1................7th GRADE
WHAT STUDENT IS MAKING:
You will draw an accurate account of the human figure draped in Arab or Princess clothing from life. Be sure to create a background which ties in with the Middle East or would be appropriate for a Princess.
TEACHER PRESENTS:
Explain selecting a composition
Explain value range and the benefits of using a full range of values including white and black
Point out how everything on the model has a light and dark side particularly folds and wrinkles.
Consider a background; use your knowledge of the Middle East or that of a Princess to create a suitable environment.
Draw should resemble models.
Use contrast to help the figure stand out from the background.
Go over judging criteria
HOW TO CREATE ARTWORK:
Step #1.Use a live model(s), set up in an interesting but comfortable pose, sitting or reclining in a chair or standing on top of a table so as to be seen from a good perspective. Drawing should resemble models.
Step #2. Using the given materials draw the model from your perspective. Include head, hands, and feet if visible. Contain the entire figure within the edges of the paper, but fill the space well. Shade using darks and lights (4-5 different values).
Step #3. Show attention to detail in the clothing. Use shading to emphasize folds in the cloth material.
Step #4. You must include a appropriate background in order to fill and finish the composition.
STEP #5. Label artwork on the BACK!
STEP #6. Clean up.

WHAT JUDGES ARE LOOKING FOR:
- Drawing skills. Correct proportions were used (figure).
- The folds are shaded smoothly using a wide range of values (dark to light). The folds are also soft and smooth looking.
- A creative background must be used which depicts a Middle East environment or that which is fit for a Prince/Princess.
- Composition: The figure should fill the entire page without going off the paper. (Space)
- Draw should resemble models.
- The finished work is neat and detailed.
