PAPER SCULPTURE Egyptian Mask (Pharaoh/Queen)....Event 1......6th GRADE
WHAT STUDENT IS MAKING:
You will create a 3-dimensional portrait using construction paper and mixed media adornments.
You will:
*Create a stylized portrait of an Egyptian pharaoh or queen
*Use a variety of color combinations in the design
*Use a variety of paper sculpture techniques (scoring, folding, curling, etc.)
*Use correct facial proportions
*Create a balanced composition
TEACHER PRESENTS:
1. Display prints of Egyptian Sarcophagus Burial Masks.
2. Display sample of the project.
3. Discuss the steps of constructing the paper mask.
4. Emphasis balance, correct facial proportions and harmonious color schemes.
5. Go over judging criteria
HOW TO CREATE ARTWORK:
Step #1. Fold a 9x12 piece of light brown construction paper in half lengthwise. Along the folded edge, draw one half of an oval shape for the face. Cut this out. Cut a pie shaped wedge off of each end of the oval, along the folded edge. Overlap each edge and glue, to create a 3-D base for the face.
Step #2. Cut and paste the nose, from the scraps of the light brown paper. Be sure to place the nose below the center of the face. Glue the nose so that it stands off of the face (3-D).
Step#3. Using various colors of paper, cut and glue a mouth, eyes, and ears on the mask.
Step#4. Select a 12x18 piece of paper in the color of your choice. Fold in half lengthwise. Along the folded edge, draw ½ of the shape for the headdress. Cut this out. You will attach a the face to this piece with a stapler.
Step#5. Select a 9x12 piece of paper in the color of your choice. Fold in half short ways. Along the folded edge, draw ½ of the shape for the front of the headdress. This will be stapled over the forehead of the face.
WHAT JUDGES ARE LOOKING FOR:
1. The student created 3-D areas that extend beyond the face.
2. The student used a harmonious color scheme
3. The work is balanced and neat
4. The work reflects the style of Ancient Egyptian Art
5. The project is well crafted and stable

MIXED MEDIA "ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPTS".........EVENT 1....................6th GRADE

You will create a design of an initial using a variety of luminous materials such as metallic pencils and gold paint to emulate the style of an Illuminated Manuscript.
The student will:
TEACHER PRESENTS:Discuss the history of book illustration in medieval times. Explain that the resulting design should be reflective and luminous.
The teacher will demonstrate a variety of lettering techniques and will discuss using lines to create texture and patterns.
Go over judging criteria
HOW TO CREATE ARTWORK:
Step #1- Sketch out your stylized "letter/ initial" design on sketch paper, remember to fill the whole page with your design.
Step #2- Create a border around your design
Step #3- Redraw your design onto black construction paper
Step #4- Fill in the design and surrounding around with metallic colored pencils, gold or silver paint, and construction paper crayons.
Step # 5 - Put name label on BACK.
Step # 6 - Clean up.
