WHAT DOES THE TEAM leadER DO BEFORE THE EVENT?
- First and most importantly,
A Team Leader should put together a team of creative students.
- Make sure students are aware of the ARTAlympics website. Maybe even look at it together as a group, so that questions can be addressed.
- Then you help these students select appropriate EVENT LESSONS based on their interests and strengths. Students should look at all five of their choices for EVENT ONE and all five of their choices for EVENT TWO.
Each LESSON will have images, instructions, judging criteria, and a supplies list.
(See the PAST EVENTS tab for examples of winning work from previous years.)
- Next, you should prepare your students for their events. Teach them skills
that adhere to their chosen EVENT LESSONS, and give advice on ways to improve their technique and the image(s) they are creating. Make sure part of the prep is doing the work in the time allotted - work on the whole thing, and then come back and do details. (I've seen many good artists not place because they get stuck on the details to early, and leave part of the paper blank- these never score well.)
.
A well chaperoned group is a well behaved group!
Each Team Leader should discuss appropriate behavior with all members.
ALL STUDENTS should receive and read THE STUDENT RULES.
ALL PROCTORS, JUDGES, TEACHERS AND CHAPERONES,
should receive and read THE TEACHER RULES.
Please try to have one chaperone for every eight students you bring.
IF possible, let me know if you have a qualified Judge.
This can be anyone with an art background- we will feed them.
Please bring a box or container labeled with your school name. All you students artwork will be placed in here for you to take home- (make sure it will hold 12"X18" work)!

WHAT DOES THE TEAM leadER DO AT THE EVENT?
When you arrive at the ARTAlympics, you will check in and get your students settled in the gym (with a chaperone), and then you will be called out for an informational Team Leaders meeting.
If you have one, you will head to your assigned EVENT ROOM to get EVENT ONE ready to go. Most Team Leaders will be assigned an EVENT ROOM. The EVENT ROOM will have one or more boxes of supplies, corresponding to the EVENT LESSONS that will take place in it.
All students should have already practiced and be prepared, so the person running the EVENT ROOM is only supposed to introduce each lesson, show examples and monitor the classroom. The EVENT ROOM should be set up when you arrive with a box that has everything in it that is needed to complete the artwork. IF you have a trusted chaperon that can stay in your EVENT ROOM, you may walk around and check on your students. BUT you must be back for the last 15 minutes of each event to oversee the finishing procedures (names added to labels, labels placed on the back of artwork, no identifying marks on the front of the artworks, and supervising the cleaning up of the room by the students, as it's an important part of the ARTAlympics).
At the end of your second event, you should place everything back in the provided tub, along with the lesson plan folders and posted signs from outside the door. If something is too large or will not fit, just place it with the tub. Put everything out in the hall next to the door.
Then join your team for lunch!!!
*** Please make sure that your students and chaperone(s) know, that your chaperones need to monitor your students until you get there.
